Paint Pour Class - Why So Expensive?
I had someone ask me about the Paint Pour class and why the price tag is $40 per person. Let’s explore this a little bit! We’ll look at the actual class first. Materials: Acrylic paint, fabric paint, lubricant, and other materials needed for the “pouring” part Cups and Containers for paint Canvases Dropcloth Thumbtacks Right there, you have large chunk of money. While some of it is sourced from ReCraft, most of f it we have to purchase and unfortunately, these supplies are not cheap. Hopefully as we continue to do these classes, we can source more of the materials from ReCraft and bring the ticket price down. Instruction/Content Materials are just part of the cost. The other thing you’re getting is a professional artist with years of experience and knowhow. One of the most imPOURtant (lol) steps for this is mixing paint. This is the most interesting parts because you will learn traditional techniques and learn the skills to be able to develop your own unique mixing technique. We’ll talk about different techniques for pouring. Then you’ll mix your own paint, choose a pouring technique, and create a piece of artwork. We also will cover some different types of “canvases” that you can use with these techniques - things like bottles or christmas ornaments. In addition to that, we will cover what to do with the waste paint and explore some different projects for what you can do with the leftovers. It’s important to us to make sure that we talk about waste and make sure that we #craftresponsibly as we create together. As you know, accessibility and low prices are very important to me. Most of our events are free or $20 and under. Some of our classes will be more expensive, but it’s not because I’m jacking up the price to make a huge profit. It’s because those classes use more materials and/or require specialized instruction. My goal with classes/events is to have a mixture of free and paid events. While accessibility is important to me, it’s also very important to me to support artists. If we were to charge less, then Charyl would be making less than minimum wage to teach these classes and I wouldn’t be compensated at all of the use of my space, materials, and the time that I spend on set up/clean up, and marketing/promoting. Artists and small business owners have to make a living and pay bills and eat food (and support their cinnamon tea habit…). As a musician, I got burnt out as a freelancer because I had to fight every day to be properly compensated. I want to avoid doing that to my teachers and the people who make the ReCraft community so awesome. SO! All that being said, I am VERY excited for this class. These paintings are beautiful, and you will go home with so much knowledge and the ability to do this on your own. Paint pouring/fluid art is a beautiful medium and you will be equipped to create gorgeous works of art! We are also expanding the classes to be an hour and a half, and adding a $10 “watch & learn” ticket to each event for people to be able to watch and learn, but not participate. This means you can take notes and learn how it’s done and try it at home without the expensive price tag. Each class has a limit of 5 “watch & learn” tickets, so if you can’t afford a $40 ticket, this is an INCREDIBLE value for the knowledge that you will get. Please let me know if you have any questions about this event! ~ Bethany
